Lovepoppet is inspired by the folk magic “poppet,” a doll made for casting spells or aiding a person through magic. Instead of casting spells, Lovepoppet gives partners, family members or friends who are physically apart a way to communicate nonverbally through a variety of playful physical and tactile interactions. The handmade dolls come in pairs that are connected via networked electronics (such as Arduino or Lilypad) and facilitate a small variety of interactions that allow partner doll-owners to communicate via touch. Each doll is individually crafted, and owners are encouraged to customize their dolls with personal details, such as fabric from each other’s clothes or a lock of hair.
